saya beli Modem smart Usb ini seharga 970.000 (888.000 + PPN 10 %).
sampainya dikos di sekitaran kampus USU, saya langsung coba pakai. saya colokkan usb modemnya ke laptop, tunggu beberapa saat, dan langsung di connect.
setelah saya pakai, kecepatannya memang lumayan cepat. mungkin didukung karena saya tinggal tidak terlalu jauh dari tower Smart, hanya sekitar 3,5 Km. mulai saat itu sampai saat ini, saya puas memakai modem smart.
Operator smart pernah juga cerita ke saya, kalau Kecepatan internet smart bisa stabil dan oke karena mereka memakai jalur sendiri yakni EVDO. ibarat jalan raya, operator lain-lain sama dalam satu "jalan raya" sehingga sering terjadi kemacetan, sementara smart modem memiliki "jalan rayanya" sendiri, yang orang lain tidak boleh jalan disana, jadi smart jalannya adem ayem aja, serasa di jalan tol terus. he..he

CDMA CELLULAR : There are many attributes of CDMA which are of great benefit to the cellular system
* Soft handoff.
Since every cell uses the same radio frequency band, the only difference between user channels is the spreading code sequences. Therefore, there is no jump from one frequency to another frequency when a user moves between cells. The mobile terminal receives the same signal in one cell as it does in the next, and thus there is no harsh transition from one receiving mode to another. Two or more neighboring base stations can receive the signal of a particular user, because they all use the same channel. Moreover, two base stations can simultaneously transmit to the same user terminals. The mobile (rake) receiver can resolve the two signals separately and combine them (see diversity). This feature is called soft handoff.
* Soft capacity or graceful degradation.
In FDMA and TDMA, N channels can be used virtually without interference from other users in the same cell but potential users N+1, N+2, ..., are blocked until a channel is released. The capacity of FDMA and TDMA is therefore fixed at N users and the link quality is determined by the frequency reuse pattern.
In theory, it does not matter whether the spectrum is divided into frequencies, time slots, or codes, the capacity provided from these three multiple access schemes is the same. However, in CDMA, all the users in all cells share one radio channel and are separated by codes. Therefore, an additional user may be added by sacrificing somewhat the link quality, with the effect that voice quality is just slightly degraded compared to that of the normal N-channel cell. Thus, degradation of performance with an increasing number of simultaneous users is "graceful" in CDMA systems, versus the hard limits placed on FDMA and TDMA systems.
* Multipath tolerance.
Spread spectrum techniques are effective in combating the frequency selective fading that takes place in multipath channels. The underlying principle is that when a signal is spread over a wide bandwidth, a frequency selective fade will corrupt only a small portion of the signal's power spectrum, while passing the remaining spectrum unblemished. As a result, upon despreading there is a better probability that the signal can be recovered correctly. For an unspread signal whose spectral density happens to be misplaced in a deep fade, an unrecoverable signal at the receiver is virtually assured.
To optimally combine signals received over various delayed paths, a rake receiver can be used.
* No channel equalization needed.
When the transmission rate is much higher than 10 kbps in both FDMA and TDMA, an equalizer is needed for reducing the intersymbol interference caused by time delay spread. This is because when the bit period becomes smaller than about ten times the time delay spread, intersymbol interference becomes significant. However, in CDMA a correlatoris needed at minimum. To achieve good performance a rake receiver is needed combat delay spread.
* Privacy.
* An important requirement of spreading signals is that they be "noise-like", or pseudorandom. Despreading the signal requires knowledge of the user's code, and for a binary code with spreading factor N there exist 2N possible random sequences. In military systems these codes are kept secret, so it is very difficult for an unauthorized attacker to tap into or transmit on another user's channel. Often it is even difficult to detect the presence of a spread-spectrum signal because it is below the noise that is present in the transmit bandwidth.
Note that in cellular systems, the codes are fully described in publicly available standards. In digital systems, security against eavesdropping (confidentiality) is obtained through encryption. This is a highly desirable alternative to the analog FDMA cellular phone system in wide use today, where with an inexpensive scanner one can tune in to the private conversations of unwary neighbors.
There are, of course, a number of disadvantages associated with CDMA; two of the most severe are the problem of "self-interference," and the related problem of the "near-far" effect.
* Self-interference arises from the presence of delayed replicas of signal due to multipath. The delays cause the spreading sequences of the different users to lose their orthogonality, as by design they are orthogonal only at zero phase offset. Hence in despreading a given user's waveform, nonzero contributions to that user's signal arise from the transmissions of the other users in the network. This is distinct from both TDMA and FDMA, wherein for reasonable time or frequency guardbands, respectively, orthogonality of the received signals can be preserved.
* The near-far problem arises from the fact that signals closer to the receiver of interest are received with smaller attenuation than are signals located further away. Therefore the strong signal from the nearby transmitter will mask the weak signal from the remote transmitter. In TDMA and FDMA, this is not a problem since mutual interference can be filtered. In CDMA, however, the near-far effect combined with imperfect orthogonality between codes (e.g. due to different time sifts), leads to substantial interference. Accurate and fast power control appears essential to ensure reliable operation of multi-user DS-CDMA systems.

1. The signal occupies a bandwidth much greater than that which is necessary to send the information. This results in many benefits, such as immunity to interference and jamming and multi-user access, which we’ll discuss later on.
2. The bandwidth is
spread by means of a code which is independent of the data. The independence of the code distinguishes this from standard modulation schemes in which the data modulation will always spread the spectrum somewhat.
3. The receiver synchronizes to the code to recover the data. The use of an independent code and synchronous reception allows multiple users to access the same frequency band at the same time.
In order to protect the signal, the code used is pseudo-random. It appears random, but is actually deterministic, so that the receiver can reconstruct the code for synchronous detection. This pseudo-random code is also called pseudo-noise (PN).

Secara fisik antara handphone GSM dan CDMA tidak ada perbedaan yang mencolok bahkan kalau dilihat sekilas keduanya serupa. Yang membedakan adalah kartu yang dipakai atau operator sellular yang mengoperasikan kedua jenis jalur ini. Sebagai contoh operator yang bekerja di jalur keduanya yaitu operator CDMA antara lain :smart, flexi, esia, fren, starone, ceria, sedangkan operator GSM meliputi : simpati, as, XL bebas, XL jempol, mentari, im3, three dan masih ada yang lain. Untuk lebih jelas bisa ditanyakan ke counter-counter terdekat, karena hampir setiap tahun lahir penyelenggara operator yang baru dengan layanan yang beragam. Prinsip Kerja
Adapun prinsip kerja kedua jalur tersebut sebagai gambaran dapat dijelaskan sebagai berikut, kami sadurkan dari Majalah CE (Computer Easy) ed.12/2004 hal.37 dst. Dalam pembahasan kali ini, akan menggunakan analogi awam yang mudah dimengerti bagi kita yang belum jelas perbedaan antara keduanya, sehingga diharapkan dari penjelasan di bawah ini dapat memahami prinsip kerja dari kedua teknologi ini.
Sebelum membahas lebih dalam mengenai teknologi GSM dan CDMA, ada baiknya jika Anda mengerti terlebih dahulu sistem pengiriman dan penerimaan data dalam jaringan digital, khususnya dalam dunia komunikasi. Semua data yang dikirim maupun diterima dalam jaringan ini harus dalam bentuk digital. Hal yang sama juga berlaku untuk suara yang dikeluarkan dan diterima oleh penelepon saat berkomunikasi. Suara yang dikirimkan oleh penelepon akan diterima oleh microphone pada ponsel. Selanjutnya, suara ini akan diubah menjadi bentuk digital dan dikirimkan melalui gelombang radio ke Base Transceiver Station (BTS) milik operator yang digunakan. BTS inilah yang menerima data dan ponsel yang digunakan tadi dan meneruskannya (switching) ke BTS tujuan. Dan BTS tujuan ini, data selanjutnya akan dikirimkan ke ponsel tujuan yang seharusnya menerima panggilan tersebut. Tentu saja, ponsel penerima akan mengubah data digital yang diterima menjadi bentuk suara agar bisa didengar oleh penerima. Prinsip umum ini berlaku pada semua sistem digital, baik GSM maupun CDMA. Namun, detail prinsip kerja dan kedua sistem digital tersebut tidaklah sama
GSM: GLobaL System for MobiLe Communications
GSM atau Global System for Mobile Communications merupakan teknologi digital yang bekerja dengan mengirimkan paket data berdasarkan waktu, atau yang lebih dikenal dengan istilah timeslot.
GSM sendiri merupakan turunan dari teknologi Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). Teknologi TDMA ini mengirimkan data berdasarkan satuan yang terbagi atas waktu, artinya sebuah paket data GSM akan dibagi menjadi beberapa time slot.
Timeslot inilah yang akan digunakan oleh pengguna jaringan GSM secara ternporer (sementara). Maksud dan digunakannya timeslot secara temporer adalah timeslot tersebut akan dimonopoli oleh pengguna selama mereka gunakan, terlepas dan mereka sedang aktif berbicara atau sedang idle (diam).
Gambaran yang lebih mudah untuk memahami prinsip kerja GSM. Analoginya seperti ini: andaikan sebuah armada taksi (dalam kasus ini berperan sebagai operator) yang memiliki 100 armada taksi (armada sebagai time slot). Armada taksi (timeslot) tersebut disewa oleh penumpang (pengguna). Secara otomatis, armada taksi tersebut tidak bisa digunakan oleh pengguna lain, walaupun bisa jadi pengguna tadi sedang tidak berada di dalam taksi (seperti sedang menunggu atau sedang bertamu ke suatu tempat sedangkan taksinya disuruh menunggu). Dalam posisi seperti ini, sudah jelas bahwa taksi itu sudah di-booking oleh pengguna pertama dan tidak mungkin melayani penumpang lain. Taksi tersebut baru bisa digunakan oleh penumpang lain ketika pengguna pertama sudah selesai menggunakan taksi tersebut (sudah sampai tujuan dan sudah dibayar). Inilah yang disebut prinsip monopoli temporer pada jaringan GSM.
Dari gambaran di atas terlihat jelas bahwa sistem GSM tidak mengizinkan penggunaan ponsel jika sistemnya sudah penuh (saat seluruh armada taksi sudah disewa, maka tidak ada lagi taksi kosong untuk disewa penumpang baru). Inilah yang membuat pengguna akan mendengar nada sibuk dari ponselnya saat hendak melakukan panggilan keluar (outgoing call). Namun, prinsip yang digunakan oleh GSM juga memiliki kelebihan. Teorinya, timeslot dedicated yang disediakan ini menjamin penggunanya bisa mendapatkan kualitas layanan komunikasi yang lebih konstan, tidak naik turun.
Kekurangannya adalah ketika jaringan GSM sudah penuh, maka pemilik ponsel biasanya akan mengalami kesulitan untuk melakukan panggilan atau bahkan menerima panggilan. Hal ini disebabkan oleh tidak adanya timeslot kosong yang bisa digunakan. Kembali ke analogi di awal pembahasan: jika semua armada taksi sudah disewa, Anda tidak akan mendapatkan taksi kosong.
CDMA: Code Division Multiple Access
Berbeda dengan teknologi GSM, teknologi CDMA tidak menggunakan satuan waktu, melainkan menggunakan sistem kode (coding). Prinsip ini sesuai dengan singkatan CDMA itu sendiri, yaitu Code Division Multiple Access. Jadi, sistem CDMA menggunakan kode-kode tertentu yang unik untuk mengatur setiap panggilan yang berlangsung. Kode yang unik ini juga akan mengeliminir kemungkinan terjadinya komunikasi silang atau bocor.
Seperti sudah dibahas di awal, CDMA tidak menggunakan satuan waktu seperti layaknya GSM/TDMA. ini menjadikan CDMA memiliki kapasitas jaringan yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan jaringan GSM. Namun, hal ini tidak berarti jaringan CDMA akan lebih baik daripada jaringan GSM karena tetap ada batasan-batasan tertentu untuk kapasitas jaringan yang dimiliki oleh CDMA.
Seperti jaringan GSM, analogi yang sederhana untuk memudahkan Anda memahami prinsip kerja jaringan CDMA. Analoginya seperti ini: jika jaringan GSM diumpamakan sebagai armada taksi, maka jaringan CDMA bisa diumpamakan sebagai sebuah bus. Sebuah bus (diumpamakan sebagai frekuensi) bisa menangani banyak penumpang bus (pengguna yang melakukan panggilan). Hal ini dimungkinkan karena setiap penumpang menggunakan kode tertentu yang unik. Hal ini juga yang memungkinkan tidak terjadinya komunikasi silang atau bocor. Setiap penumpang bisa berbicara dan menentukan tujuannya tanpa takut terganggu ataupun mengganggu penumpang lain. Bus ini juga tidak akan dimonopoli oleh satu orang saja, sehingga setiap orang bisa menggunakan bus tersebut untuk mengantarkan mereka ke tempat tujuannya masing-masing.
Namun, seperti layaknya sebuah bus, jika sudah terlalu banyak penumpang maka jalannya semakin berat dan kenyamanan penumpang akan terganggu (isi dalam bus akan semakin sesak). Hal yang sama juga terjadi di jaringan CDMA yaitu jika jaringan sudah terlalu penuh, maka yang terjadi adalah penyusutan coverage area (ruang lingkup atau jangkauan) dan jaringan CDMA itu sendiri. Jika diumpamakan, semakin sesak isi bus maka ruang gerak setiap penumpang juga akan menyempit. Tidak jarang pula kualitas suara menjadi korban dan penuhnya jaringan CDMA.
Kesimputan: Tidak ada gading yang tidak retak
Sistem telepon selular berbasis digital, baik itu GSM maupun CDMA memiliki kelebihan dan kekurangannya masing-masing. Untuk area yang lebih padat penggunaannya, teknologi CDMA tampaknya lebih unggul untuk melayani banyak sambungan secara bersamaan. Hal ini disebabkan oleh karakteristik dan jaringan CDMA itu sendiri. Dengan menggunakan jaringan CDMA, sebuah daerah yang padat penggunaannya akan memiliki kemungkinan koneksi yang lebih tinggi, walaupun bisa jadi terjadi penurunan coverage area dan kualitas suara jika beban jaringan terlalu tinggi. Teknologi GSM pada intinya lebih sesuai untuk daerah yang tidak terlalu padat, namun sangat membutuhkan coverage area yang konstan. Selain itu, area perkotaan sekarang memiliki banyak gedung bertingkat. Karakter geografis seperti ini sangat berpotensi memperlemah sinyal sehingga coverage area semakin kecil.

Google mentioned today that a version of the Nexus One that would function on Verizon Wireless' network would be out soon. Verizon, for its part, says that the CDMA(INFO) version of the Nexus One that is compatible with its 3G network will not be sold directly by Verizon in its stores or on its website, but rather will be sold by Google itself.
